“The beautiful thing about the art is that it reflects our thoughts, it changes our minds, it demonstrates our foolishness, it brings tears into our eyes but it leaves us with profound opportunity to reflect.

UN Women is very proud to be associated with Son Rise and United Nations is proud to be a part of this journey.”

Nishtha Satyam

Deputy Country Representative, India, Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka

“Nothing gets to the heart the way cinema does. SON RISE is ‘Magic’ since it brings out not only voices of discrimination but of courage, of sheer strength. I am so confident that Son Rise will lay the emergency exit for gender issues that our country faces. We, at UN Women are privileged and honored to partner with Vibha Bakshi on her film SON RISE.”

Congratulations Vibha Bakshi for presenting us with such a rare and powerful film – SON RISE. The least we could do as the audience was to give a full house standing ovation to you and the brave men and women of Haryana in fighting gender inequality.

SON RISE : India’s fight for what’s right for its women & girls: Had the privilege to see this amazing documentary made by Vibha Bakshi on this hugely important topic. Set inside the heartlands of Haryana, it tells the amazing stories of brave men who have endured incredible odds to fight for what’s right for women and girls and become role models in the process…doing so simply because it was the right thing to do.

Vibha Bakshi’s ‘Son Rise’ shows the ray of hope in the fight for gender equality in Haryana

‘Son Rise’ starts with disturbing visuals that capture how deep patriarchy is rooted in Haryana, how illegal sex-selective abortions are still prevalent in parts of the State, described as kudimaar (girl-killing) districts by a courageous government doctor in the film. But before you could ask, what’s new, director Vibha Bakshi introduces us to a few good men who are working for gender equality and are helping women to overcome the trauma of violence.

Vibha Bakshi’s incredible documentary Son Rise brings the message for an urgent need for us to act NOW through the stories of incredible men who are leading the change.

Vibha – only you could have brought this story of injustice and hope together. The end was no fairy tale. There is a lot to be done. Thank you – it’s not something we should forget tomorrow.

Son Rise’ an incredible documentary covering today’s reality in Haryana, India of female foeticide, gender based violence and a patricharchal system that is only just starting to change. Recognising the champions of change and building awareness of frightening realities that are often kept hidden. Difficult issues eloquently explained…a must watch! Take a bow Vibha!

SON RISE: Amidst Anguish, Tainted Providence And A Fragile Hope Of Evolution- Son Rise is an intense, compelling and a facund portrayal of why things are the way they are!

Gender inequality is a hot topic for any discourse – Never ending arguments ensue, dissentient voices are raised, and matter of fact justifications are also provided. But come to think of it what is the use of it all until one gets to the root cause of the predicament and examines the prime mover of things? Vibha Bakshi has done just that!
